When I was on my honeymoon in Jamaica, I was picked out of a crowd of about 300 people to come up to the stage.  When I got on the stage they told me I was competing in a Michael Jackson dance contest!  I almost walked off, but decided to stick it out.

My lovely wife was there to capture every move and she made a little highlight video as a tribute to the late Michael Jackson.

If you make money on the internet with your own home based business or if you have been trying to make money online, then it is important to understand your marketing funnel.  It is essential that you understand your methods of finding interested prospects and converting them into paying customers.

What is the process that you take them through?

Do you drive prospects to a sales letter or blog?  Do you give content away for free or sell them?  Do you try to get their email address or build trust?

Everybody does it a little bit differently.  You need to find out what works for you and stick with it long enough to determine it’s effectiveness.

One of the challenges that I see with newbies is that they don’t commit to a specific plan of attack.  They change their mind every two days on the best way to market their product or service.  Their marketing plan or funnel is changed on a whim because they watched another free video from a marketer trying to sell the next latest and greatest system.

You might actually be selling stuff if you stop changing your gameplan every time you watch a new video.  Pick something and try it.

Try it long enough to determine it’s effectiveness in your marketplace before changing your entire strategy because you watched some new free video of an internet marketer trying to sell you something.

Internet marketing is simple.  YES… simple!  Stop letting people confuse you… and stop over complicating it!

It is simple, but it may not be easy.  It is simple because making money online boils down to a few things.  If you get good at doing a few things right, then you can become very successful.

It isn’t easy because it takes effort, determination, and a willingness to keep going… even when times are tough.

If you want to make money, then follow these 3 steps:

1.  Determine your goals.

2.  Pick a marketing strategy / business model that makes sense to you.

3.  Implement it.

Do NOT alter your plan just because you learn something new today, unless it specifically fits into your business model.

This doesn’t mean to continue using ineffective strategies.  This means do something long enough to determine if it is effective or not.  Stop changing on a whim!

Making money online is more like an art form than an exact science.  Everyone does it a little bit differently.

Follow what makes the most sense to you and give it try.

All too often I hear reasons to why someone thinks that they can’t build their own business. I hear reasons to why they feel that their dreams are not attainable. These “reasons” are really “excuses.”  In business and in life you can’t have both success and make excuses at the same time. You must choose one or the other.

Most of the time excuses are based on myths. When you discover that these excuses are myths and not reality, then it makes it easier to move forward with confidence.

Here are some of the most common myths about building a home-based internet business:

Myth # 1: Web design is too hard and I don’t know how to build a website.

Reality: Building a website has never been easier. Most hosting companies have templates that allow anybody who can type to build a website. In addition, there is software that makes building a website as easy as using a word processor. I recommend that you learn basic web design skills so that you have an understanding of how it works. However, you can also outsource this to a professional or hire a high school or college student to do it for you. Depending on the complexity of your website, a professional shouldn’t charge you more than $500. I’ve had complete sites built for as little as $200. This may be even cheaper if you find a local student willing to make a few extra bucks.

Myth #2: I’d like to sell an information product, but I’m not qualified to write a book or make a product. Only experts are qualified for this.

Reality:  Firstly, you may be an expert in something already and not realize it. You may know more about raising children, training dogs, stamp collecting, coaching, teaching, knitting, carpentry, or [fill in any subject] than most people. Secondly, it isn’t difficult to become an expert if you are not one already. If you know just a fraction more than the next person, then you can be perceived as an expert. In addition, you don’t need the “expert fairy” to come along and waive a magic wand declaring you as an expert. You do not need anyone’s permission to become an authority in a subject matter. Go to the library and read 10 books on any subject and you will become an authority compared to everyone else. If you don’t want to become an expert, then borrow the expertise of someone else. Build a partnership with an expert. Interview experts and consolidate all the information into a book.

Myth #3: I don’t have time.

Reality:  You don’t have time NOT to find time. You have the same 24 hours per day as the rest of the population. This life is not a trial run. This life is the real thing. If you want to own your own business, then you can’t afford not to schedule the time. I understand that you are busy. Everyone is busy. Make the time to do something each day or each week—even if you schedule only 20 minutes per day or one hour per week. A lack of time is an excuse. Put time in today in order to have more free time in the future… make it happen.

Myth #4: I don’t know/understand software, shopping carts, credit cards, accounting, legalities, or [any other excuse] of starting a business.

Reality:  C’mon… are you really going to let a weak excuse like this stop you from pursuing your dream? Go to the library and get an understanding. Find a friend who is an attorney and ask them. Find a friend that has their own business and ask them. Get the information you need so that you feel comfortable.

Myth #5: It’s too late in the game, or there is too much competition.

Reality:  The internet is still in its infancy. More people are getting online ever single day. Consumers are spending more and more money online every year. The marketplace can handle competitors. Do you think Burger King refuses to put up a restaurant because McDonalds was on the corner first? Did Bill Gates refuse to start Microsoft because IBM and Apple computers existed? Yes, you may see competitors in the marketplace, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t succeed. It doesn’t mean that you can’t become bigger and better than companies that already exist. There is usually more than one dry cleaner in a neighborhood. There is usually more than one restaurant in any given area. There is often more than one car dealership on the same street. There will always be competition… get over it.

Myth #6: I need to find the one magic bullet, or that one piece of information that will give me all the answers to success.

Reality: We discussed this earlier. There is NO magic bullet. Gain some knowledge and then try. Gain more knowledge and then try some more. Don’t be afraid to fail your way forward. Just take some action and get started! You will have to go through a learning curve to achieve your desired success. It will take work, dedication, and commitment. You must commit to gaining the knowledge and put that knowledge into action. You have all the power to make your dreams reality—there is no magic bullet.

Myth #7: I need a new or original idea.

Reality: While it would be great if you found a brand new idea that has never been done before, it isn’t how most people achieve success. My experience tells me that most success is found by modeling an existing idea. Much success is reached by becoming a direct competitor of an existing idea or product that is already successful. Don’t waste your time trying to reinvent the wheel. Look for something that works and make it better or add to it. It is much easier to see what is already working and follow the path of least resistance.

Myth #8: I need the perfect product and it will sell itself.

Reality:  Nothing sells itself. Good marketing and advertising sells things. If you spend all your time trying to think of the perfect product, then you might never get started. Everything has its flaws. Find out what people want to buy and sell it to them.

The sooner you believe that these “excuses” are only myths and not realities, the sooner you can get out of the way of yourself and begin building a successful business.

Remember… you cannot make excuses and have success at the same time. You need to choose one or the other.

What do you choose?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re just beginning, or you’ve already achieved some success online, attitude is everything.

If you believe you can be successful, then you can achieve success with the proper steps.  Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever a mind can perceive and believe… it can achieve”.

A winning attitude in business starts with recognizing that others have already done what you are setting out to do—make money online with a home-based business.  Coming into line with the obvious fact that it is not impossible is a great help.  Yet all too often we look at a challenge as if no one had ever been able to do it and make it seem way bigger and more difficult in our mind.

As silly as that sound look at the way people approach an obstacle that plenty of people have already overcome. It seems extra difficult for the person currently facing it. They really act as if it just can’t be done. You can hear it in the way they talk about it.  They can’t see the possibility of themselves doing it.  They know full-well that others have done it, yet for them it just somehow seems not possible.

As Mark Twain said it, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.  The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks, and then starting on that first one.”

Develop a winning attitude and have a positive outlook with a cheerful expectation that this will work for you.  Whether you believe you can or you can’t, you’re right!

Your mental attitude will make or break you.  I challenge to develop a winning attitude not only with your business venture, but also in all areas of your life.

The internet is an exciting, fast moving, and ever changing marketing medium for building value and delivering content to customers. It has come a long way since its humble beginnings, yet it is still in its infancy and it will be used in the future in ways many of us haven not even considered.

Nowadays, anyone with a strong desire and a will to succeed has an opportunity to capture a small percentage of the billions of dollars being spent online. Online shoppers in the United States spent only $7.7 billion in 1998. By the year 2000 that figured almost quadrupled to $28 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Since then online retail purchases more than quadrupled again by jumping to over $130 billion in 2007.

In 1999 online purchases made up only .6% of all retail purchases in the US. Today, 3.4% of all retail sales are made on the internet. This is a 567% increase in 8.

Let’s put these explosive numbers in perspective: If you owned a home in 1999 that was worth $150,000, then in 2007 it would have been worth $850,500 if it increased by 567%. It would have increased by $700,000 in just 8 years!

Imagine if the price of a $30,000 car increased by 567% over 8 years, then it would sell for $170,100. Could you imagine having to pay another $140,000 for that same car 8 years later?

Consumer spending on the internet is exploding and there is no end in sight. Skeptics claim that shoppers will slow down because of identity theft and credit card fraud.

I say no way.

The numbers prove it.

Online security is increasing. Consumers are more educated with the risks online, and how to avoid falling prey to internet scams.

These numbers will continue to climb with more consumers getting online daily. Online purchases also climb as consumers become more comfortable purchasing online; which results in more frequent transactions from customers and higher dollar volumes spent through internet purchases.
